Even before it is lit, the subtle fragrance of a scented candle will heighten your energy level,. So when you come home tired and frazzled, the aroma & flickering glow of a scented wax candle will relieve your tightness & lift your spirits.

Scented candles are great gifts for every season and all occasions; especially when they are hand crafted by yours truely.

1. Pick Your {Fragrance For Candle Making}

Fragrance oil is available in virtually any craft shop. You can also shop for it online. I suggest that you opt for fragrance oils rather the cheaper alcohol and water based fragrances. Because your wax mix is oil based, your fragrance must also be oil based. Why? Oil and water do not mix so a water based perfume will not mix properly with the oil based wax.

2. Pick Your Wax

The basics of {making scented candles} are more or less the same as for ordinary wax candles. Start by selecting your wax. The current day market offers a versatile range of wax starting with beeswax, palm or soy & moving on to gel or paraffin wax. You should decide on the fragrance intensity of your candles before selecting your wax. For instance, wax with less density holds less fragrance than higher density wax.

3. The Art of Scented Candle Making

Now we’ll go through the process of creating aromatic candles.

The first task is to melt your wax. I suggest using a double boiler. That means put the wax in a small pot. Now place that container into a slightly larger pot partially filled with water. Next step – heat the water. Use a thermometer to ensure the wax is not burnt. The temperature must be kept between 170 &180 degrees F.

Once your wax has melted, insert a wick in the mold & take the wax away from the heat source. Next add your fragrance oil. A mixture of 1 ounce fragrance oil to 1 pound wax will produce a fragrance that permeates your candle up to 6% of its density. Be aware that greater amounts of fragrance will cause the candle to burn out sooner because it has a higher liquid density.

Now pour your melted wax/fragrance mix into it’s mold. The only task left is to let it the mold cool before removing your candle.

Congratulations, well done!

4. Experiment as You Go Along

You will gain great expertise in all phases of candle making once you start experimenting. By using different fragrances and colors, you will perfect the candle making technique and thoroughly enjoy the process.

It’s a great feeling to gift your friends with a {homemade scented candle} knowing that they will find the fragrance both relaxing and invigorating.
